The American Association of Advertising Agencies (4As) selected eleven students from FSU’s School of Communication and from FSU’s School of Information for a one-of-a-kind experience this summer through their Multicultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP). The Program works with advertising agencies across the country to place selected diverse applicants in open internship positions. With a mission “to provide and showcase the advertising industry with the best talent through world-class development opportunities,” 4As MAIP only selects around 120 students from across the country, making the program extremely competitive.
Dr. Sindy Chapa, School of Communication associate professor and director of FSU’s Center for Hispanic Marketing and Communication, said, “This is a huge distinction for our students, faculty and College. We are very proud of our each one of them and excited about the opportunity this unique experience can bring to their future careers.”

Ruth Carrion is graduating with a bachelor’s in Media Communication Studies in May 2019 with the goal of becoming an Advertising Strategist. She was selected to intern with Spark Foundry in Chicago. “Being chosen for this internship means I have true purpose and potential to create change in what matters to me: diversity in media; but also, that I have earned a seat at the table,” Ruth said.
Darilyn Cotton is earning her M.S. in Integrated Marketing Communication, graduating in August 2019. She’ll intern with Hill Holiday in Boston this summer. Darilyn said, “Being Chosen for this internship means a lot to me. When I first enrolled in the IMC program I was determined to land a good internship. I didn’t know where or how it would happen, but it did. MAIP is providing me with a great opportunity to intern for an amazing agency in Boston.”
Caleb Dawkins will graduate in 2020 with an bachelor’s in Advertising and Political Science. He is interning with FCB Chicago this summer. After graduating, Caleb is planning to live in either Chicago or California and work as an Art Direction or Social Media Strategist. “I am so excited to become a MAIP Fellow and have this internship, because not only am I getting an unmatched internship experience but I’m gaining a network of people with similar identities who want to see us succeed,” Caleb said. “Never in my life did I think I would get an internship in Chicago for a summer, but it was because of MAIP that this is a reality.”
Jasmine Farooq will earn her bachelor’s degree in 2020 in Information Communication Technology with a minor in statistics. This summer she is interning in Los Angeles with Deutsch. She hopes to earn a career as a Creative Strategy Director, start her own business in the natural hair market, and travel the world. Jasmine said, “I could not be more grateful to be selected for the MAIP 2019 class. Being chosen as Strategy Intern for Deutsch LA means not only gaining experience in the Strategy field at one of the most amazing agencies, but I get to do it while being in a city I’ve always dreamt about visiting. This is literally my dream come true.”
Vanessa Foinquinos will graduate in May 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in Advertising and Editing, Writing, and Media with plans to be an account manager. “I feel honored to be chosen as a MAIP fellow and earn a place among the top advertising students and professionals across the country,” Vanessa said. “Being chosen for this internship reassures me that my hard work ethic and passion will drive me far in my career. I am most excited to explore New York City this summer and get real-world experience in the advertising industry.”
Jazmine Francis-Nobrega is an Advertising major graduating with her bachelor’s degree this summer after her Account Management internship with Essence Global in New York. Her career goals are to work for a diverse company where she can make a difference in the entertainment industry and learn film and design skills. “Being chosen for MAIP is a special feeling because of the prestige and reputation that comes with it,” Jazmine said. “It really is an honor to be chosen because it has opened the door for so many others, and I am eager to go through this process.”
Andrea Guevara-Gresch will graduate with her bachelor’s in Marketing with a minor in Business Analytics in 2020. She said, “Once I graduate, I would love to work for a Media Company or an Advertising Agency that has a global presence as well as offices around the world. I love exploring new cultures and cities and having the opportunity to possibly work in a company headquartered in Europe would be a dream!” When asked about what it means to be chosen for MAIP, Andrea said, “I couldn’t believe it when I got my offer email, it was a moment of adrenaline because this internship seemed like an unattainable opportunity. After being selected as a 2019 MAIP Fellow, I have regained the confidence and the understanding that I do have what it takes to move forward in this industry. There are so many things I am excited about, but one is definitely getting hands on experience in a department I have never worked in, which is the Media Department. I’m also excited to learn from the professionals around me and to meet the other MAIP Fellows in NYC.”
Joseph Ng is earning his bachelor’s in Advertising, graduating in Fall 2019, aspiring to be an Art Director at an agency and later a Creative Director. He is interning with Ogilvy in Chicago this summer as an Art Direction intern. Joseph said, “Being selected for this opportunity has affirmed to me that I’m on the right track for success. I am excited to join the MAIP family and become a part of the community while gaining real-world agency experience.”
Jamie Parrish will graduate with her M.S. in Integrated Marketing Communication after completion of her internship at 360i in New York this summer. After graduating, Jamie plans to work in management or strategy at an agency in Atlanta that focuses on ethic consumers, specifically African Americans. She said, “Being chosen lets me know that this company saw potential in me. This will be the source of my drive and determination to succeed once I start the job. I am from Tallahassee and have lived home throughout my college career. I am excited to finally live on my own in NYC.”
Lauren Prince will also graduate with her M.S. in Integrated Marketing Communication this summer. MAIP placed her at Digitas agency in Chicago. When asked about her career goals, Lauren said, “After completing the fellowship, I hope to start my career in the industry at a top agency. After building my experience for a few years at different agencies I aspire to transition to work on the client side where I can specialize in marketing/advertising for the Beauty Industry. My ultimate dream is to become Chief Marketing Officer of a beauty brand I love!” In reference to the MAIP internship program, Lauren said, “Being selected as a MAIP Fellow is nothing short of a blessing! Having this opportunity will allow me to kickstart my career in the industry by interning at one of the biggest marketing agencies in the world as well as having access to world class professional development. I am extremely grateful as first-generation college student to be a part of such an amazing network like MAIP.”
Maria Vasquez will graduate with her bachelor’s in Advertising in Fall 2019. This summer she is interning with Mullen Lowe in New York. After graduation, Maria would like to do fulfilling work at an advertising agency in another city. “This internship means a lot to me because it will be my first formal agency experience as well as my first time living in another state for an extended period of time,” said Maria. “It will be a chance for me to grow personally and professionally.”
