SCSD Faculty Clinical Supervisor Ellen Nimmons was selected as this year’s recipient of the Clinical Career Award at The Florida Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (FLASHA) Annual Convention.
This award recognizes outstanding contributions to clinical science and practice in communication science and disorders over a 20 year or longer period. The lifetime contributions may have been in clinical service, supervision or administration of clinical service, clinical research, or any other activity which has promoted excellence in clinical service.
“It is wonderful to receive the appreciation and recognition from my peers and colleagues for a career that has been my passion for clinical care, education, collaboration, and service. My career has been a constant blessing from the variety of settings I have worked in, to the wonderful colleagues I have had the opportunity to work with and learn and grow,” says Nimmons. “I have been blessed within this career to develop programs from the ground up in hospitals and other agencies, administratively manage a rehab unit, and train numerous students in various levels of their education.”
In addition to her award, Nimmons received second place for the poster she had made and presented on the Interprofessional Practice and Education (IPE): Survey of Knowledge and Skills. The study aimed to examine and describe graduate students’ knowledge and skills for interprofessional practice and their self-perceptions following an experiential IPE training event.
Nimmons has been a SLP for the past 37 years and has been with the School of Communication Science and Disorders for over 16 years! When asked about the most rewarding part of her career leading up to this event, Nimmons said, “In short, making an impact on a student’s training and helping patients recover their speech, language, cognitive, and swallowing abilities has been the most rewarding part of my career. I hope that my passion for helping others and training students within the profession inspires these students to be the best that they can be within our field.”
